What is the endocrine system and how can chemical personal care products impact upon it? By The Divine Company
As the regulator of all biological processes in your body, the endocrine system is responsible for the development of the brain and nervous system, as well as the function of the reproductive system, metabolism and blood sugar levels.
By using products that contain disruptive chemicals to your endocrine system, there is no end to the impact this can have upon our bodies. From causing the overproduction or underproduction of hormones, that may lead to increased muscle mass, to inappropriate production of insulin or blocking of hormones necessary for normal development and can even lead to weight gain and an increase in fat cell generation.
Even in utero with the protection of the placenta, the endocrine and detoxification system of a baby is not developed enough to be able to effectively handle chemicals and toxins. Research is in fact indicating that it can take up to age seven or eight for children to develop the ability to detoxify to the degree of an adult.
Babies have a larger ingestion of food, fluid and air per unit of body weight than adults, increasing the risk of toxins and their ability to inflict harm.
Can I wait until I’m pregnant to implement a chemical-free lifestyle?
During pregnancy we pass our fat-soluble chemicals into our unborn babies via the umbilical cord. By polluting our bodies with harmful and toxic chemicals, it is now scientifically proven that babies are being born pre-polluted with on average 287 chemicals in their little umbilical cords prior to even entering the world.
According to Professor Marc Cohen and many other researchers around the world, alarmingly one of the fastest ways a woman will detox is during pregnancy. Another is through breastfeeding, Although breastfeeding is scientifically proven to be by far the best thing a mother can do for any child, clearing the body of toxins and accumulated chemicals pre conception will minimize any chemical transfer.
Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals
Our endocrine system consists of: Ovaries, testes, adrenals, pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary, pineal and hypothalamus. Our endocrine system sends signals out to almost every cell within our body. It regulates our hormones, controls hormone development and regulates our metabolism. It is important to understand and appreciate fully the detrimental impact of hormone disrupting chemicals on your body.
So what are endocrine disrupting chemicals?
Endocrine disrupting chemicals are synthetic hormones – Xeno Estrogens, which mimic the female hormone estrogen. These chemicals once in the body send the endocrine system into disarray. These chemicals, as you will see below where I identify specific hormone-disrupting chemicals are equally detrimental to men, women, children and the planet.
