Is it true that what I put on my skin soaks in? – By The Divine Company

Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and also the thinnest. Less than one centimeter separates our body from potential toxins. Worse yet, our skin is highly permeable, with just about anything we put on our skin ending up in our bloodstream.

Our skin can absorb chemicals up to 10 times faster than by way of ingestion. When you eat something, the enzymes in your saliva and stomach help to break it down and flush it out of your body. However, when you put these chemicals directly onto the skin, they are absorbed straight into the bloodstream without filtering of any kind.

Without realizing it, the average woman puts over 200+ chemicals a day on her skin of which 65-70% is being absorbed by the body.

Once these chemicals find their way into your body, they tend to accumulate over time. When you add up daily exposure over the course of a lifetime, this adds up to an untold amount of chemical exposures.

We can transform so much of these challenges both within ourselves and prevent our babies from being born with these chemicals in their little bodies by simply removing the chemical burden we place on our body everyday.

To minimise our chemical burden, our daily rituals like skincare, personal care, e.g. deodorants, body washes, toothpaste, etc., should be replaced with certified organic products that support not hinder our body yet have the same if not higher efficacy than that of traditional products.

According to Professor Marc Cohen, one of the fastest ways we detox is through maternal transfer when we are having a baby. Many of the chemicals that have accumulated in our body get transferred to our children during pregnancy hence why babies are being born with on average 287 chemicals in their little umbilical cords no.

Another way in which we detox is through breastfeeding and breastfeeding is the only thing I personally recommend as it is the only super food for our babies if we can possibly breastfeed, I believe we should, but we need to detox our body of fat soluble chemicals first because our babies deserve better than our breast milk that on average contains the world over approximately 200 chemicals.

Of the 287 chemicals found in out babies at birth, here is a list of the type recorded in the studies. Please note: some chemicals, as you can see below, are not just one class of chemical, but fall into multiply categories, e.g., some may be neurotoxic as well as carcinogenic or linked to hormone disruption.

And, here is a list of where we currently find ourselves as women in relation to hormone-related disorders.
